Clinical Profile
I provide clinical and consultative services through the Food Animal Reproduction and Medicine Service (FARMS) which provides ambulatory services to dairy, beef, swine, and sheep clients. My routine work is primarily with dairy clients. I also provide emergency service to all clients on a rotating schedule. My clinical commitment is approximately 16 weeks per year. While in the field, I am responsible for teaching clinical and production medicine to veterinary students participating in our clinical rotation and training of residents and interns. We usually have between 4 and 6 students per rotation.
Research Profile
My long-term research goals are to improve the health of dairy cattle and to improve the sustainability of the dairy enterprise. My main areas of research are:
– Uterine microbiology and immunology in health and disease – Epidemiological investigation of the risk factors for uterine diseases – Development and evaluation of therapies for the prevention and treatment of uterine diseases – The use of herd simulation models and budget impact analysis to understand how uterine disease and impaired fertility affect the profitability of dairy herds.
Currently, I am investigating the origin of the uterine microbiome and the intersection between the uterine microbiome, metabolome, and the immune system in dairy cows to understand the etiology of uterine diseases.
