One of Eight Institutions Nationwide Providing Foraminotomy
UF Large Animal Hospital is one of only EIGHT institutions in the US trained to perform life-changing foraminotomies, a procedure that relieves pressure on trapped nerve roots in horses, often caused by osteoarthritis.

Pioneering Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery for Horses

At the University of Florida Large Animal Hospital, our team of board-certified surgeons is proud to be one of only eight institutions in the US trained to perform life-changing foraminotomies. This groundbreaking procedure relieves pressure on the horses spine and alleviates nerve pinching that is often caused by osteoarthritis.
Invented by Dr. Jan-Hein Swagemakers in 2020, foraminotomy is a minimally invasive procedure that uses advanced endoscopy to safely remove excess bone, create more space, and restore optimal nerve function. By inserting a specialized endoscope through a small incision, our skilled surgeons can alleviate nerve pinching and restore comfort to horses suffering from debilitating back pain.
The good news is that horses tend to recover quickly and comfortably after foraminotomy. In fact, rehabilitation begins just three days post-surgery, and most horses are back in ridden work within six weeks.
To further advance the field of equine spine surgery, our hospital recently partnered with RIWOspine to host a 2-day endoscopic spine surgery course. This comprehensive training program provides veterinarians with the expertise and confidence they need to perform this life-changing procedure.
