The UF Large Animal Hospital Reproduction Service is dedicated to providing specialized equine breeding and reproductive care for your mares and stallions. Selected procedures in camelids and small ruminants are also offered. Our service operates at the hospital and in an ambulatory capacity. 

At the UF Large Animal Hospital, our Reproduction Service is committed to delivering exceptional care for equine breeding and reproductive health. We specialize in diagnosing and treating a range of conditions in mares, stallions, and occasionally, camelids and small ruminants.

Our ambulatory service enables us to provide a comprehensive range of reproductive procedures and services, from fertility evaluation to reproductive surgery and ultrasound testing. We also offer on-farm consultations to discuss your breeding options and create a customized plan for your horses.

Our experienced veterinarians and staff are dedicated to helping you optimize the health and fertility of your mares and stallions, ensuring the success of your breeding program.

Basic Breeding Services for Mares

  • Breeding management using fresh, cooled, or frozen semen
  • Pregnancy diagnosis
  • Twin reduction by manual crush
  • Infertility evaluation and treatment
  • Evaluation of endometrial biopsies
  • Diagnosis and removal of ovarian and uterine tumors
  • Management of retained placentas and other peripartum conditions

Advanced Breeding Services for Mares

  • Treatment and breeding management of the problem mare
  • Management of high-risk pregnancies
  • Deep horn insemination
  • Diagnosis and removal of uterine cysts
  • Endoscopic evaluation of the uterus (hysteroscopy)

  • Management of advanced twin pregnancies with ultrasound guidance

  • Semen collection and evaluation, including:
    • Cooling trial in multiple semen extenders
